About the Poster

The Illiterate Man is the Same as the Blind is a 1920 Soviet poster by Aleksei Radakov (Russian: Алексей Радаков). Its full text reads, "The ILLITERATE man is the same as the BLIND man. failures and misfortunes await him everywhere" (Russian: «НЕГРАМОТНЫЙ тот-же СЛЕПОЙ, всюду его ждут неудачи и несчастья»).

The poster was one of the first to follow Lenin's famous December 26, 1919 decree on public literacy. He ordered that all Soviet people between ages 8 and 50 who were illiterate would have to study reading in Russian or their native tongue.
