About the Painting

Skybell is a 1915 Cubo-Futurist cityscape painting by Russian painter, Aristarkh Lentulov. The literal translation of the work's original title is Firmament - Decorative Moscow (Russian: Небосвод - Декоративная Москва).

Lentulov, (Аристарх Лентулов), was an important Russian artist who is largely known for his Cubo-Futurist and avant-garde work. He was one of the founders of avant-garde artist association, the Jack of Diamonds group, and is regarded as an important influence on Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich.

Lentulov's Parisian friends called him "the Russian Cubo-Futurist," a reasonable nickname, given his particular mix of Cubo-Futurist and Russian styles. He took a lot from the plastic ideas of Picasso, Braque, Leger and other innovators of the pictorial language. Meanwhile, in unfolding the composition with reverse perspective, Lentulov's works resemble traditional Russian icons and frescoes. When you look at Skybell, you'll see that the architectural volumes of the houses are arranged in ledges, shown from several points of view, just like an Orthodox icon. Meanwhile, white-stone Moscow is illuminated with joyful festive light: bright colors rejoice, houses and bell towers, temples and ancient city walls all move tightly together in a single energetic impulse.
