About the Painting
The Merchant's Wife at Tea (Russian: Купчиха за чаем) is a 1918 painting by Boris Kustodiev (Russian: Борис Михайлович Кустодиев).
The Merchant's Wife at Tea is a painting unique in its impressive power and harmonious integrity. A young woman drinks tea on the balcony of a wooden mansion. The folds of her dark purple dress and the same cap accentuate the whiteness of her rounded bare shoulders and the fresh colors of her rosy face. A sunny summer day tends towards evening. Pale pink clouds float across the blue-green sky. And on the table, a samovar glows with heat next to deliciously arranged fruits and sweets - juicy, red watermelon, apples, a bunch of grapes, jam, pretzels and rolls in a wicker breadbasket.
The woman is beautiful. Her strong body breathes health. Sitting comfortably, propping her elbow on one hand, she flirtatiously juts her plump little finger aside as she drinks from a saucer. A cat, purring and curving its tail with pleasure, flies to her buttery shoulder. Reigning supreme in the picture, taking up most of the space an attention, this stout woman seems to reign over the half-asleep provincial town that she personifies.
