About the Painting
And We are Opening the Gates (Russian: И мы открываем врата) is a 1922 painting by Nicholas Roerich (Russian: Николай Рерих) and forms part of his "Sancta" Series.
In the picture we see a monk opening an arched gate, behind which is a road leading to an ancient Russian monastery. Through the open gates you can see undulating hills, a chapel in the distance, and a winding river - a landscape characteristic of northern Russia. The gates divide the picture into two distinct zones, drawing a line between the earthly world and the divine. Roerich's painting reminds us of the need to be open to that other more spiritual world.
