About the Painting

And We See, sometimes called And We Will Behold (Russian: И узрим) is a 1922 painting by Nicholas Roerich (Russian: Николай Рерих) and part of his "Sancta" Series.

The picture depicts the Face of Christ Not Made by Hands, an image cast in legend. In one account, the king of Edessa, fell ill with an incurable disease and sent his ambassador to Jesus for help. The king wanted to invite Jesus to live in his city or receive Christ's image for his healing. And so, when the ambassador arrived at the place where Christ usually preached, he began to paint him. However, as he tried to look upon Jesus, a blinding light emanated from him and blinded him. When Jesus learned of this, though, he washed his face and imprinted in onto a plate. The ambassador took the plate back to his king, who was immediately healed and ordered for Jesus's face to be placed above the gates of the city. And in this, Roerich's picture, that's what we see - Christ's piercing, all-seeing gaze held aloft above the city by angels.
