About the Painting

The Hunters at Rest (Russian: Охотники на привале) is a 1871 painting by Vasily Perov (Russian: Василий Перов).

Perov was a passionate hunter, and the theme of hunting and the natural world attracted him throughout his career. In Hunters at Rest, his most famous work, Perov shows three hunters in the middle of a lively exchange. On the left is, probably, an experienced hunter from the impoverished nobility, talking about his exploits with great enthusiasm and passion. In the middle lies a middle-aged man in Russian peasant clothes, distrustful and grinning, listening to these hunting tales with skepticism. On the right squats a a trusting young newcomer, listening with trepidation to the stories of a the more seasoned hunter, greedily absorbing every word.

Given such a composition of characters, it appears that Perov is showcasing the cycle of life: youth, eagerly knowing the world, absorbing it with faith in a miracle; then comes maturity and experience, when nothing is taken for granted and is questioned; after that, maturity is replaced by old age, living with memories, constantly falling into the idealization of the past. And so, for a work that at face value appears simple and clear, there lies a deep message.
