About the Poster

This Have You Volunteered? poster is one of the most well-known propaganda posters there is across the entire world. Mimicking the 1914 Lord Kitchener Wants You British Army poster that launched the pointed finger recruitment poster aesthetic, this poster first published in June 1920 during the Russian Civil War called Russians to volunteer to join the ranks of the Red Army.

This classic poster is synonymous with revolutionary passion, civic duty, and a sense of responsibility for the state of the young Soviet nation. The effect the image had on the Russian people was so impactful that the exact same poster was reused heavily during WWII.

The artist behind this poster, Dmitry Moor (Russian: Дмитрий Моор), has spoken about how influential the poster was. He's quoted saying:

"I have collected many conversations about this poster. Some told me that they were ashamed in front of it, ashamed that they had not yet signed up as volunteers."

«Я собрал много разговоров по поводу этого плаката. Некоторые мне говорили, что они стыдились его, что им было стыдно не записаться добровольцами».
