About the Painting

Guests from Overseas (Russian: Заморские гости) is a 1901 painting by Nicholas Roerich (Russian: Николай Рерих).

Two years before making this painting, Roerich traveled along the traditional Russian waterways which the ancient Slavs used to label as leading "from the Varangians to the Greeks." Along these routes, Viking traders would travel all the way from Scandinavia to Constantinople. Throughout Guests from Overseas you can feel the spirit of fabulous antiquity, as if this is an illustration of one of the epics.

The canvas depicts a watery landscape with a caravan of lavishly decorated boats. In them are "overseas guests" - Viking merchants from afar carrying various wonders for sale. Their boats are adorned with carved figures, richly and brightly colored, and sail under beautiful colored sails. But they are not defenseless - their sides are hung with large tear-shaped shields, and warriors sit inside the boats, chained from head to toe in strong metal armor.
