About the Poster
Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge! (Russian: Клином красным бей белых!) is a 1919 early communist propaganda poster and Suprematist masterpiece by Lazar Markovich Lissitzky (Russian: Лазарь Маркович Лисицкий).
The poster, surprising in its simplicity, is full of pictorial symbols and skillfully plays up empty and occupied space: a red triangle symbolizing the Red Army wedges into a white circle, crushing the defenses of the anti-communist and imperialist forces of the White Army. The circle and wedge were the most important motif in Soviet art of the 1920s, becoming the personification of the avant-garde and the graphic embodiment of revolutionary spirit . On a black-and-white background, the inscription “Beat the Whites with a Red Wedge” is visible, an integral part of the composition.
Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge! is one of the most celebrated Suprematist works of art. Its influence continues to this day. Just in September 2020, FC Vitebsk, the football club of the town that Lissitzky taught in, released a new uniform based on the poster. You can see it below.
