About the Poster

Composition. Ships. (Russian: Композиция. Корабли.) is a 1913-1915 painting by Pavel Filonov (Russian: Филонов П.Н.) that he included in a series or works he exhibited at the Academy of Arts in 1919 under the title, Entry into World Blossom (Russian: Ввод в Мирoвый расцвет).

Filonov was one of the central figures of the Russian avant-garde, sometimes called "the eyewitness of the invisible" (Russian: «очевидцем незримого»). He created his own method - analytical art. The essence of the method consists of the combination of creative intuition with knowledge of the subject of the image and analysis of what the artist sees with the eye.

Filonov believed that a work of art is a living organism, living its own life and endowed with its own energy. Therefore, the picture must grow and develop in the same way as all living things in nature.

According to Filonov, the artist does not fill up the canvas with his art, but rather lets his art grow as a kind of living organism. In Ships you can literally trace how Filonov's hand moved in alliance with thought and imagination out from the lower left edge of the canvas.

Filonov's works practically never contain an independent background. Rather, they are densely populated by people as well as organic and inorganic nature. One gets the feeling that this is a certain fragment of the world in which everything is tightly and closely interconnected in a way that we normally do not think of.
