About the Painting
Boris Kustodiev's (Russian: Борис Михайлович Кустодиев) Maslenitsa (Russian: Масленица) is a beautiful painting that celebrates Russia's traditional "butter week" - the equivalent of Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday in the West. Kustodiev created three different Maslenistsa paintings in 1916, 1919, and 1920.
Kustodiev is celebrated both as a portrait painter and for his paintings of Russian life inspired by his childhood memories in the Volga region. His works often depicted folk festivals and holidays.
In Maslenitsa, he beautifully conveys the atmosphere of a deeply Russian festival, full of snow-covered streets, horse-drawn sleds, and buttery pancakes. The excitement in the painting is palpable as the people rejoice at the imminent arrival of spring.
