About the Painting
Girl with Peaches (Russian: Девочка с персиками) is a 1887 impressionist painting by important Russian painter, Valentin Serov (Russian: Валентин Серов).
The painting is one of Serov's most significant. Its original name was Portrait of VM, where VM stands for Vera Mamontova, the daughter of the industrialist S. Mamontov who often visited Serov in his Abramtsevo estate. The work changed names as the picture turned out to be not so much a portrait of a specific girl, but rather a generalized image of youth itself - cheerful mischief sitting for a minute at the table.
The girl has expressive eyes with a sparkle dancing inside, as if she has conceived of some new trick. Her pose itself shows how difficult it is for her to sit still even for a short time at the table. How she wants to break loose and run away to play in the garden! The cold background of the picture and the strict decor of the room contrasts with her pink blouse and a red bow, offset by her swarthy face and dark eyes. The whole room is imbued with sunshine, which is emphasized by the soft tones of peaches and leaves, the already yellowing tree outside the window. A gentle blush plays on the girl's cheeks and harmonizes with the peaches nearby.
The heroine's cheerfulness is shown in light, joyful tones, and the feeling of her purity and tenderness is enhanced by the colors of the white tablecloth and a brightly sparkling silver knife. These individual elements are combined into a single whole in the picture, enriching the image. Both immediately after its creation, and now, many years later, this work amazes the viewer with its freshness, lightness, warmth and joy.
