About the Poster

The title of this 1934 poster is Be Proud, Be Glad to Become a Red Army Soldier... (Russian: Будь горд, будь рад стать красноармейцем в ряд...). The artist is Gustav Klutsis (Russian: Густав Густавович Клуцис), 1985-1944. Ironically for an artist who created so many beautiful propaganda posters, Klutsis was arrested by Soviet authorities in 1938 and would die in a prison camp.

The poster's title comes from the final line of the poem, Leo Tolstoy and Vanya Dyldin (Russian: Лев Толстой и Ваня Дылдин) by renowned poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky (Russian: Владимир Маяковский).

The inscription at the top of this poster reads Military service in the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army is the honorable duty of citizens of the USSR (Russian: Воинскя служба в Рабоче-Крестьянской Красной Армии представляет почетную обязанность граждан СССР).
