About the Poster

Moscow is a vintage Soviet travel poster from 1930 by Sergey Sakharov (Russian: Сергей Сахаров).

The poster show's Moscow's iconic Red Square. As you would expect, you can see St. Basil's Cathedral with its onion domes in the distant left, and the mighty 15th century Spasskaya Tower stands proudly in the middle of the picture. What would have excited viewers of this poster the most when it came out, though, is the red pyramid in the middle of the image. That strange, imposing structure is none other than Vladimir Lenin's Mausoleum, constructed the same year this poster was published. For many foreigners looking at this travel poster, this would be the first time they saw Lenin's Mausoleum.
