About the Poster

The raised fist started being used in Germany during the latter half of the 19th century as a workers' greeting. After the First World War, the gesture symbolized belonging or solidarity with the German Red Front (German: Rote Front) movement, created in the early 1920s . Its members greeted each other, sharply throwing their right hand up with a clenched fist. The organization's badge was a clenched fist, typically in the color red.

The greeting received the widest recognition all over the world as a symbol of the struggle against fascism in the 1930s, especially during the Spanish Civil War . The gesture symbolized the unity of the proletariat of all countries and the readiness to fight to the end for the victory of the International.

During this time, exchanging this greeting was also very common in the USSR among Komsomol members, communists and young people in general.

These days, this socialist raised fist is popular among left-wing radicals.
