About the Painting

Boris Kustodiev's (Russian: Борис Михайлович Кустодиев) Maslenitsa (Russian: Масленица) is a beautiful painting that celebrates Russia's traditional "butter week" - the equivalent of Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday in the West. Kustodiev created three different Maslenitsa paintings in 1916, 1919, and 1920.

This 1916 version stands out significantly in relation to works by other Russian masters for its unusual colorfulness.

Amid pink and gold clouds, the last rays of the evening illuminate the snow-covered city, high spiers, and multi-colored domes of churches. Though the day is drawing to a close, excitement is still in the air and the landscape teems with life.

Across the fabulous, snow-covered country everything is permeated with movement: horse-drawn sleighs rush past one another, the snow shimmers in many different shades, and a carnival and merry-go-round down in the town are surrounded by throngs of revelers.

Kustodiev painted Maslenitsa along with most of his most famous works during a time when both he and his country were suffering. Russia was battling through WWI and Kustodiev himself was seriously ill, having undergone several several spine surgeries. Nevertheless, the expression of joy and vigor in his paintings reveals that Kustodiev was committed to admiring life and its poetry.
