About the Painting
Saint Basil's Cathedral (1913) is a beautiful painting by Aristarkh Lentulov (Аристарх Васильевич Лентулов) and likely his most famous work. It is a Cubo-Futurist take on Saint Basil's Cathedral (Собор Василия Блаженного), Russia's most well-known onion domed church located on Red Square.
Lentulov created this special painting under the influence of French Cubism. The cathedral appears as a fantastic architectural myth, in which the fusion of different times and cultures takes place. Lentulov strove to show the temple "as if at once from everywhere, from all sides" («как бы сразу отовсюду, со всех сторон») and "to convey the fabulousness and unrestrained fantasy of form and color" («передать сказочность и безудержную фантазию формы и цвета»).
The image of architectural forms is conditional, different points of view are combined in the composition, golden paper stars are glued onto the blue chapters of the cathedral, patterns are written on twisted columns. Not only is the form of the cathedral stripped away, but also that of the sky. All this for Lentulov to show the development of the cathedral in time and space. And so, though very much painted in the spirit of Cubism, you can clearly see how this work is approaching futurism (lack of characteristic features of the modern industrial world notwithstanding).
