About the Poster
Emancipated Women Build Socialism! (Russian: Раскрепощенная женщина — строй социализм!) is a 1926 Soviet propaganda poster created by Adolf Strakhov-Braslavsky (Russian: А. И. Страхов-Браславский).
The poster is made in the style of the avant-garde and encourages the Soviet people to welcome and promote the active participate of women in the construction of socialism on an equal basis with men. Another version of the poster was commonly used for 8th March / International Women's Day celebrations.
Russia became one of the earliest major nations to achieve women's suffrage in March, 1917. The Soviet constitution would go on to guarantee equality for women, as described in Chapter X, Article 122 of the 1936 Constitution:
"Women in the USSR are accorded equal rights with men in all spheres of economic, state, cultural, social, and political life."
«Женщине в СССР предоставляются равные права с мужчиной во всех областях хозяйственной, государственной, культурной и общественно-политической жизни.»
Of course, legal equality does not necessarily mean equal treatment in practice. Nevertheless, in many measures, such as economic independence from men, Soviet women enjoyed significantly more freedom than was the case in many nations around the world.
