About the Poster

This Glory to the Red Army! (Russian: Красной Армии — слава!) Soviet propaganda poster is a work of art full of mixed emotions. Artist, V. Golovanov (Russian: Л. Голованов) created this poster in 1945. However, the victorious soldier you see happily posing in it had actually died the previous year during a Red Army offensive.

In the top right, you'll see what was a famous Red Army poster hanging on the wall. It reads "Let's get to Berlin!" (Russian: «Дойдем до Берлина!»). The soldier you see in it, the celebrated Soviet sniper, Vasily Golosov, is the one and same man who in the main picture is smiling and leaning on a wall of the Reichstag in Berlin.

Of course, Golosov, never made it to Berlin. However, by including this well-known, deceased soldier, the poster's artist Golovanov is touchingly including the fallen in the jubilation that accompanied the Soviet conquest of Berlin in May 1945.

Contrast this poster with another famous Soviet symbol of the capture of Berlin - the photograph of two Red Army soldiers, Yegorov and Kantaria, hoisting the red banner of the USSR on the roof of the Reichstag. Instead of the frame being filled with a shelled-out city and symbols of political power (the Reichstag and Soviet flag), this poster offers a more human touch.

Golosov himself represents the Red Army - all the men and women who fought heroically and all those who didn't make it through the war. On the wall behind him, you can make out playfully graphitized celebrations of Russian soldiers: "Got it!" (Russian: Дошли!), "May 2nd, 1945" (Russian: 2/5/45), and "Glory to the Russian people" (Russian: Слава русскому народу).

No doubt it was a dream of Golosov's to make it to Berlin and write his name on a stately wall while celebrating with his comrades. In this poster he's finally able to do so, and the friends and family of all the other Red Army soldiers who didn't make it can celebrate through Golosov's smiling image as well.
