About the Poster

This Glory to the Russian People (Russian: Слава русскому народу) 1947 propaganda poster is by artist, Viktor Ivanov (Russian: В.С. Иванов).

The poster depicts a young Soviet engineer against the background of a traditional Russian hero. a "Bogatyr" (akin to the romantic ideal of the chivalrous knight). During this time, it was common in Soviet poster art to combine modern themes with heroic figures from Russia's past. This was especially popular in WWII posters that evoked Russia's centuries-old prestigious military history.

Behind the main characters at the bottom of the poster are construction sites of the rapidly rebuilding Soviet Union. The poster is made in the style of socialist realism and is aimed at affirming the national pride of the Russian people, as they try to mend their country after the devastation of WWII. The inscription placed under the poster reads: "Glory to the Russian people - the heroic people, the creator people!" (Russian: «Слава русскому народу - народу-богатырю, народу-созидателю!»). The message is clear - civilian workers can be just as noble, important, and brave as their military counterparts.
