About the Poster
Lengiz Books on All Branches of Knowledge (Russian: Ленгиз. Книги по всем отраслям знания) is a 1925 Soviet poster created by artist, Alexander Rodchenko, and photojournalist, Lily Brik (whose picture you see).
This beloved poster is one of the best known early examples of avant-garde advertising with all its classic techniques: photomontage, a rigid geometric design, and bright colors.
The poster was part of a nationwide advertising campaign to promote literacy in the Soviet Union. It depicts a girl in a headscarf, of a classic 1920s/1930s style, who portrays a Komsomol activist walking around screaming about books from Lengiz - the Leningrad State Publishing House.
The long term Soviet promotion of literacy saw great success over the years. The program, Likbez (Russian: ликбез), kicked off in 1919 with a decree from Lenin himself. Between 1919 and 1926, male and female literacy increased 37.9% to 66.5% and 12.5% to 37.2% respectively. In 1939, literacy rates had risen to 90.8% and 72.5% for men and women. By the 1950s, the Soviet Union had effectively achieved full literacy (and according to ourworldindata.org, higher rates than had Western Europe).
