About the Poster
Long Live the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army - the Faithful Guard of the Soviet Borders (Russian: Да здравствует рабоче-крестьянская Красная Армия – верный страж советских границ) is a 1935 propaganda poster by Gustav Klutsis (Russian: Густав Клуцис).
In the poster, overlooking a massive Red Army parade on Red Square in Moscow are Stalin and Kliment Voroshilov, then People's Commissar for Defense of the Soviet Union. Voroshilov was one of the original five Marshals of the Soviet Union and would later serve as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet while Nikita Khrushchev was General Secretary. Voroshilov played a central role in Stalin's Great Purge in the 1930s, betraying and denouncing countless officers. Later during WWII he would participate in the Katyn massacre of 1940 and prove himself an ineffective commander in charge of the Winter War with Finland. All the same, during the interwar years, Voroshilov was instrumental in modernizing the Red Army and moving much vital manufacturing beyond the Urals. Because of this, he is remembered as an extremely important figure to the eventual outcome of WWII.
