About the Painting

Composition IX is the penultimate painting out of ten in Vassily Kandinsky's Composition series. It is perhaps the most striking painting of the series. While it is often referred to as surrealist, Kandinsky, however, denied any influence of surrealism in his work. This ninth composition has a tangible decorative feel to it compared to the emotional depth and expressiveness of his earlier ones. Wide diagonal stripes of color provide a solid base in the background for biomorphic and geometric shapes that seem to float above them.
