About the Painting

Points is a beautiful 1920 painting that illustrates some of Vassily Kandinsky's most important ideas concerning the interaction between point, line, and plane.

In writings published in 1926, Kandinsky shared his analysis of the geometrical elements which make up every painting—the point and the line on the basic plane.

The basic plane, generally a rectangle or square, is what delimits and defines the entity that is the painting. The relative scale of horizontal to vertical lines on its borders gives a certain tonality to the space. A point is a small bit of color that the artist places on the basic plane. A line is what happens when you apply force to a point. How points are positioned on the plane and among each other, the story the forces behind the lines tell, and the interaction of different colors of the points all combine to create art that says something. You can read more about Kandinsky’s theories in the book, Point and Line to Plane
